Depending on your career aspirations, you can enroll in an associate’s degree program or bachelor’s degree program, which can take up to four years to complete.

Coursework may cover various subjects, such as ultrasound physics, vascular ultrasound, and pathophysiology. You may also need to complete a good number of hours of clinical training before you can graduate.

Ultrasound/Sonography Licensing in Louisiana

Once you have completed the diagnostic medical sonography program, you can ascertain your license by taking an exam issued by The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Testing will cover general sonography principles as well as abdomen, obstetrics and gynecology, neurosonology, breast sonography, or fetal echocardiography. If you have not attended a CAAHEP-accredited program, you will need to have completed 60 semester hours, a clinical internship or externship, and 12 months of work experience before you are eligible for the examination.

You can also earn your certification through Cardiovascular Credentialing International, which requires you to fulfill two years of non-invasive cardiovascular technology employment. If you have attended a non-accredited program, then you will need to provide proof that you have completed 800 clinical hours.

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists provides a sonography certificate in vascular sonography or breast sonography. Testing covers patient care, sonography procedures, and ultrasound physical principles. Upon completing your certification, you will need to renew your license every two years by earning the approved 24 continuing education credits.
