There is no state license required, but students should attend accredited programs and obtain their certification from ARDMS to find jobs that will satisfy their career goals.

Hudson Valley Community College has a Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This program require one year, it requires a minimum of an associate degree in an allied health program.

Many of these courses are 40 or 50 hours, but the bulk of the required hours are spent at various externship sites where you will all learn to apply your newly acquired skills.
You are prepared to take the credential examination from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) exam is accepted in the community of your knowledge and expertise, and employers will look at your resume for this credential.
If you need assistance with your finances, complete a FAFSA application, which is a federal grant program, and there are also federal student loan programs available. New York state also has a TAP application, which is listed on the FAFSA form. If you are a New York resident HESC will receive your information from the FAFSA application, and they will send you directions to complete the TAP application online.
In addition, New York State provides a SUNY or Cuny tuition scholarship for the top 10 percent of students in all New York high schools. If you complete your associate or bachelor’s degree and agree to work a STEM field in New York for five years after graduation, you will receive an annual award for full-time study that equals your tuition.
